Artist's Comments

this is shy.
she is 19, homeless and pregnant.
i've known her for a couple of years now.
she's very very dear to me - a good kid, a good heart.

today i will spend 24 hours with her to get a glimpse of what her street life is like.
she will do all the things she usually does and i will be with her,
with my camera, documenting it all.
then tonight i will sleep under a bridge with her where she stays.

the other day, she emailed me from the library asking if i had some extra blankets.
the dept. of transportation did a sweep under the bridge and
took everyones blankets, tents, clothes, shoes, EVERYTHING they found if there was no one there to claim it. she wasn't there and lost all her meager belongings.
dozens of homeless youth lost everything they had.
what the fuck? what the hell are we doing to these kids?!

this summer i plan to go homeless for two weeks.
i won't use any of my own money so i will have to beg, busk and tap into local resources.
if i am going to really help these kids i truly believe i have to live what they are living -
to KNOW in my bones what's it like for them.

I've always thought that to understand a little bit and to make photo series about the homeless's stories a person have to be a day or some days to really understand what means the life on the streets. You're gonna do it, you got my wishes and my admiration. Good luck to your friend, for your shots too.

ok
firstly the pic....
the title and the extension of the pipes from her head give depth to the composition.
other than that..the humanitarian concept you envisage is nothing short of inspirational...I salute you

it's so easy for the world to forget these people... your work documenting their lives with such great and powerful shots (and comments) is unvaluable

give her a big hug

and a big hug to you also
