Artist's Comments

This is Montana and his pet possum.
Montana is one of the better-known homeless here in Seattle.
He lives in an underground dug-out with his possum, his dog and numerous birds and raccoons that he has befriended.
(I'll be going to photograph it next week. Unfortunately someone recently ransacked it and almost all his belongings were either stolen or destroyed.)
He just got his section-8 so hopefully he'll have his own apartment soon.
That's Rob (also homeless and an amazing artist) skate-boarding by.

i find it utterly wonderful that you know the homeless as more than the stereotype everyone puts them under.

If home is where the heart is, they aren't really homeless, are they? The hearts of all of the people you've shared all seem to be in the right place.

You don't want to hear my thoughts. They're not illegal, just immoral.

I adore the composition of the two, the extremity of angle it lends to the whole thing. The lean of the building adds to it as well. And a grounding story t'boot. It's a huge cliché, but I like your work because it's real.

Once years ago I found my grey long-haired cat sleeping on a shelf in the garage. I pet it a couple times before it turned to look at me, revealing that it was, in fact, a possum, and not my cat. It was pretty cool about the whole thing. We exchanged no words or hisses, just went our separate ways.

They all feel so much like family to me. :)

I recently read a quote by Mary Ellen Mark, a wonderful photographer.
She said, ""I'm just interested in people on the edges. I feel an affinity for people who haven't had the best breaks in society," she explained in 1987. "What I want to do more than anything is acknowledge their existence."

Those are my sentiments exactly.

Haha, great story!

I have seen possums in the wee hours of the night, scuttling about the city looking for food.
But I have never seen a 'tame' one until I met Montana. He goes all throughout the city
with his possum perched upon his shoulders, educating people on how gentle and
well-behaved they can be. He's our own urban Jack Hanna. ;)

of anyone homeless here tunneling a dug-out and living underground.
thought that was very smart and resourceful. :)
